Yep, the Lord spoke to me through Lauryn Hill…
Yep, the Lord spoke to me through Lauryn Hill in her song, ‘Nothing Even Matters’ ft. D’Angelo.
One of my favorite verses goes,
“These buildings could drift out to sea
Some natural catastrophe
Still there's no place I'd rather be
Cause nothing even matters to me…”
A few years ago, I became somewhat obsessed with this song when it first played from my Apple music curated playlist. I repeated it over and over (and over) until I could imitate the inflection of Lauryn’s runs and feel the emotion of D’Angelo’s words. This song’s lyrics captured how I wanted to be loved. They captured what I wanted to feel. With each repeat, I waited for the day when I could experience those words.
Listening again to the lyrics a few weeks back, the same feelings of warmth and nostalgia rushed back. However, this time, the Lord had something to add.
He communicated that no human can love in the way Lauryn and D’Angelo sang. Such a love exceeds human capacity. To love someone through catastrophes and falling skies requires a sort of perfection only mastered by our Savior in heaven.
Even the love I experience from my amazing fiancé, who has a talent for making me feel like nothing else matters, pales in comparison to His perfect love.
In Romans chapter eight, Paul asks rhetorically if anything can separate us from Christ’s love. He lists everything from hell to high water, yet he concludes that nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
His love is immovable.
As women we search and dream and long for love, often hoping it emanates from someone tall, dark and handsome. But, without understanding that perfect love comes only from above, we will never find what we’re looking for. We will continue to sing songs with our focus amiss.
Love is greater than mere feeling. True love gives it’s life for another who can’t save themselves. True love doesn’t expect perfection. True loves drops everything and searches for the one who’s lost. True love remains when others leave.
This Saturday morning, I want to encourage you with a new song. In Isaiah 54:10 the Lord says, for the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. The Lord is speaking to you. Everything could drift into the sea and disappear yet nothing would matter to Him but you.
