Who is Christ to You?
Have you ever asked yourself that question?
The world we live in is more confusing than ever, with so many interpretations of Christ and His instructions for us. To some, He may be a distant idea or a faraway figure, known only as “the man upstairs”. To others, He is a historical figure with no real power to heal our broken hearts, mend our wounds, or refresh our lives.
Christ asked His followers this very question in the Gospels (Matthew 16:13-20, Mark 8:27-33, Luke 9:18-22).
Matthew 16:15 —
“'He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
After feeding a large crowd and healing a blind man, Jesus first asked them who the crowd said He was. Then He asked who the disciples said He was. The answers differed, as they should have.
Those who only knew Jesus superficially could only identify Him based on His miracles and parables, much like John and Elijah, whom we know for their words and works. But the disciples were intimate with Jesus. He shared His heart, purpose, and life with them. They knew Him as the Messiah, coming to do more than perform works; He came to save a broken world with love, mercy, and sacrifice.
I had to challenge myself with this question: Who is Jesus to me?
I spoke with my mouth that He loved me, but I struggled with guilt and shame.
I spoke with my mouth that He was a provider, but I wrestled with anxiety.
I spoke with my mouth that He is Lord, but I refused to trust Him fully.
I realized that I didn’t truly know Him. But after combing through His word and learning about His life and ministry, I developed a fuller view of my Savior. I learned to see Him as the disciples did. Each time I open my Bible, I ask Him to show me a different facet of His character so I may know Him more deeply. I am better for it.
As believers, if we want to grow in our faith, we must be sure of the truth of who Jesus is. That certainty will influence how we think, behave, and relate to others. We will be transformed as we come to know Him, our Creator (Ephesians 3:17). There is nothing better than knowing the One with all power, authority, and sovereignty.
